2018 International Championships Report
Submitted By: Global Broomball Magazine on March 26, 2018 at 10:23:37 AM

The 2018 International Championships were played at Augsburg Arena in Mpls MN March 23rd and 24th.
More than 200 of the sports top players from Minnesota, Manitoba, Washington DC, Indiana, North Dakota, New York and various points elsewhere competed in the year’s top Invitational event.

Barrie’s Tavern of Mpls MN/Syracuse NY captured the Elite Division Championship in a 2-1 OT thriller over last year’s International Champion, C&L Excavating from Albertville MN. With the victory Barrie’s Tavern swept the USA Broomball Triple Crown Series, having already won the North American Championship and MN Meltdown. Two other teams with victories in Majors this year were also in the loaded field (Kelly Lake 2018 Minnesota State Champions, and Legion BC 2018 Syracuse Can/Am Champions).

Corey Swanson, goaltender from C&L Excavating put on a performance for the ages, as he stopped over forty shots combined in the team’s semifinal 1-0 OT victory over Kelly Lake and in the championship game loss to Barrie’s. As a result of his performance Swanson was awarded the Elite Divisions MVP honor.

Hobey Stanton of Barrie’s Tavern became the youngest player in the history of the International Championships (dating back to 1985) to win the event, as the 18 year old and his line mates (21 year old brother Wyatt, and 23 year old Eric Mackey) have electrified the team of veteran players all year long.

Barrie’s Tavern coach Dave St. Aubin won the tournament for the fourth time, with his third different team (1994 and 1995 Hansen sports, 2001 USA Blue, 2018 Barrie’s Tavern).

In the Intermediate Division the Wolves from Blaine MN proved that defense does indeed win championships, The squad went 5-1 allowing only 4 goals against the entire tournament. They were all pressure cookers! Every single game they played was decided by one goal, including a 2-1 OT victory over Tonka Lift in the QF’s, a 1-0 victory over the Sun Devils in the SF’s, and a 2-1 victory over the Nordic Stars in the Championship.

Goaltender Jon Noyes of the Wolves was named the Intermediate Division MVP and his brother Jeff was named to the All-Tournament team, The Noyes brothers joined their USA Broomball Hall of Fame uncle Tommy Noyes in capturing International hardware, as Tommy took down the Elite Championship in 1987 with Tony Jaros, and then again in 2001 with USA Blue.
